Indian Carnatic Music Theory

Monday, June 30th, 2008

In our Carnatic Music system, we have two different types of Raghas. The first one is Janaka Ragha and the other one is Janya Ragha. Janaka Ragha has many names like Mother Ragha, Melakartha. In all the scale of the raghas, we have two parts. One is the ascending (aarohana) and the other part is decending (avarohana). Mother Ragha is a scale in which all the seven notes are arranged in perfect ascending and the same seven notes are arranged in the perfect decending. That is, SRGMPDNS - SNDPMGRS.

In our music system we have sixteen notes in total. With different combinations of these sixteen notes, the melakarthas are formed. In this system, there are 72 melakarthas. These 72 melakarthas are divided into two groups. The first 36 melakarthas are suddha madhyama melakarthas and the 2nd 36 melakarthas are prithi madhyama melakarthas.
In the other way, 1 to 36 melakarthas are with Suddha Madhyamam and 37 to 72 melakarthas are with prithi madhyamam.

The 72 Melakarthas are devided into 12 Chakras. Each chakra has 6 melakarthas. So, in total we get 72 melakarthas. The first 6 chakras are suddha madhyama chakras and the second 6 chakras are prithi madhyama chakras.

Shadjam and Panchamam are constant notes. In Rishabham, Gandharam, Daivatham and Nishadham, there are three different types. In Madhyamam we have two different types.

With all the lowest positioned notes, the first melakartha is formed and with all the highest positioned notes, the 72nd melakartha is formed. This is the introduction of the 72 melakartha system.

Apart from the above Seventy Two Melakarthas, all the other Raghas are Janya Raghas. We have many different classifications in this section. We have to deal them separately.

Theory of carnatic music is very very ancient and this subject has been handled by many many different educationists. The subject is the same because they are fixed and the way of approach only would change. I have also written books in the same subject.

Why Music Podcasts Are Exploding In Popularity

Sunday, June 29th, 2008

The Internet has become a very popular for a way of getting music. Many people go online to find songs to download for their phones, or iPods, or MP3 players, or even to make their own CD mixes. The Internet has become an easy way for people to access a lot of music from home.

Podcasts are another way people are sharing their music over the Internet. Podcasts allow musicians to share their music with others. Most times these musicians are small independent groups who are trying to gain publicity and get a larger fan base. This is a great way for these musicians to get their music out there, and hopefully get noticed by the music industry.

Fans also love these Podcasts. The Podcasts allow the musicians and fans to have a closer connection with each other. Fans can give the musicians their feedback on their music. This is also a great way for the musicians to get a better idea of what their fans truly want from them. The musician may get a lot of requests for the same thing, and can know change what ever he needs to in order to make his fans happy. This also allows the musician to gain a loyal fan base.

Fans can get on these Podcasts and listen to music from their favorite musicians. You can listen to music before you go out and buy the whole CD. This is also a great way for the musicians to gain interest in their new releases before they come out in stores.

Musicians are not the only ones who can benefit from Podcasts. DJs are also benefiting from this. They can Podcast their own mixes and get some publicity as well, although, most of these DJs play Podcasts just for the love of it.

Podcasts will probably soon become subscription based just like the other places you can download music from. This will allow musicians to start charging a fee for their feeds. This should not be a problem as long as the musicians keep updating their music with new songs for their listeners. There are some non music groups that have already said they would Podcast their files if it became subscription based.

If you are a music lover this is a great way for you to stay connected even more. You can get online and sample new music, and even find a new band that you might really like. You never know what you will find and what you might like. You may find a new band that peaks your interest. You can even give your feedback and have a close connection with your newfound band of liking. The Podcast benefit the musicians and fans alike, what a great combination.

Gospel Music Tracing Back Its Roots

Saturday, June 28th, 2008

Ever since some cognitive human beings have set foot on Earth, music has greatly taken part of their lives. The folks belonging to the days of yore created their own musical arrangements by plucking strings and hitting things like wood, hide, or stone. The sounds of nature have also served as one pleasant musical sound for them. They undoubtedly took pleasure listening to the sound of the waterfalls, the animals, and even the weather-related reverberations.

Music has then taken a further course. Throughout the passing of time, people have invented creative means of creating music. From the schools to the churches, there is music. The music industry has also created varied genres of music for all occasions.

You will often see or hear people preaching about the word of God. The gospel of the Lord is being delivered through the means of other people who serve as His own instruments. Simply listening to His words enlightens your spirit, right? God has often reminded His people to love one another as he loves everyone. He places every creation he has made under His care. Although every person has been created in His image and likeness, still no one leads a perfect life. To put it in a much simpler term, no one is as perfect as God is.

One’s spirituality and faith can thus be manifested by several means. Reading the bible, following the ten commandments of God, praying, singing gospel music, and attending mass are among the typical ways by which one’s spirituality is nourished. They often say that those who sing praise twice. Thus, by singing the gospel music, you are praising twice!

What is gospel music?

Gospel music is a religious music that contains the word of God. Gospel music is at all times used as one medium to praise God Almighty. In varying tunes and arrangements, gospel music can always be heard during the celebration of the mass, praise and worship activities, and healing mass.

There is no limit as to the use of gospel music. You can even make it as your morning praise habit. You can listen to it while driving your car. Or you can let it resound in your house. Some gospel music singers perform the genre in nightclubs and secular settings. These days, more and more gospel music are hence becoming danceable therefore making the enlightening of the spirit more effective.

The Roots of Gospel Music

The gospel music was first popularized by the African-American churches way back in the 1930s. Two styles of the gospel music emerged in those daysthat of the black people and that of the white southerners. Despite the two separate styles, gospel music still traces its roots from the Methodist hymnal. There came a time when the artists from the two separate categories sang the gospel music of each other.

The onset of gospel music has marked a phenomenon in America regardless of the distinction between the while and black churches. Indeed, gospel music has reached Australia that gave birth to the gospel choirs of Jonah and The Whalers and The Elementals plus the beginning of the Australian Gospel Music Festival. Norway also gave rise to both the Oslo Gospel Choir and the Ansgar Gospel Choir.

The Influences of Gospel

The trendy pop music had greatly influenced the gospel artists. In turn, gospel music has also influenced the rhythm and blues singers of the 1940s up to the 1950s.

Gospel music has reached the peek of its popularity. Until now, several other gospel musical artists are gaining their own fame for the genre and a lot other patrons are getting drawn on them.
